LIGHTWEIGHT LEGEND
Launched by BMW in 1972 the E9 3.0 CSL (L = Leicht or Light) is a homologation special built to combat the Ford Capri in the European Touring Car Championship. The CSL had thinner steel for the body, aluminium doors, bonnets, and boot lids, perspex side windows, reduced trim and no soundproofing. The RHD CSLs for the UK market retained the stock E9 soundproofing, electric windows and bumpers. The basis of the famous ‘Batmobile’ racing cars the CSL’s winning competition pedigree includes: 1973 Nürburgring 6 Hours (Amon), 1973 European Touring Car Championship (Hezemans), class victory 1973 Le Mans (Hezemans/Quester), 1973 Nürburgring German Touring Car Grand Prix (Amon/Stuck) and the European Touring Car Championship every year from 1975 to 1979. CSLs were also the basis of famous ‘art cars’ by Alexander Calder and Frank Stella. Retaining its original interior and many of its original fittings this factory RHD, matching numbers CSL has been bodily restored by UK BMW specialists.
