The History of the Alfa Romeo 2900 B

Back to Alfa Romeo History | Discuss in our Alfa Romeo Forum | Back to History Overview

Profile today: a one off replica designed and manufactured in NZ. First impressions count and we can assure you that this car has the WOW factor. Powered by a V6 turbo Alfa motor coupled with a 5 speed manual gearbox, this car is ready to go. What more can we say- it’s sleek, sexy and stunningly wild. A car that combines the style of the 30’s with the attitude of modern day motoring.

Previous History: The Alfa Romeo 2900B is a car to admire from any angle, at anytime. This classic car won the honors at many Le Mans and Mille Miglia 24 hour race between 1931-1934. The designer, Vittorio Jano, came up with what would become one of the 1930’s best engines.

Made of two four cylinder engines with twin overhead cams, it originally displaced 2.3litres and was installed into both the Tipo B ‘P3’ Grand prix racers and the 8C 2300 sports cars. By 1935 the displacement had grown to just over 2.9 litres.

In its finest hour the 8C 2900A engine could chug out 255 BHP, although for reliability, a smaller 220BHP version was installed.

The coupe was designed to cut through the air on Le Mans long straights and the compression of the engine was increased.

The drivers, Sommer and Biondetti, drove skillfully and eventually drove the Alfa to a near phenomenal victory. The pair had dealt with a ruined tyre and post fixing, were still leading in the 24 hour race, when a broken valve spelt the end of the road for Alfa.

Simultaneously the Mille Miglia was of mixed blessings having 4 specially built cars by designer Carrozozia.

Only 2/3 the engine capacity but 5/4ths the determination to take the first place honors after a grueling 1000 mile race of 1938 standard.

The resting place of the famous Alfa is of course the most prized possession of the Alfa Romeo Museum but for your enjoyment in conjunction with Sam Lyle, NZ’s own auto artist and Classic Car Rentals offer a sleek hint of days gone by.
